American Legion
Post 44
On 15 Mar 1919, 1,000 officers and enlisted men of the A.E.F. assembled in Paris, France, for the purpose of formaing an organization of World War veterans. The cacus was called to order by Eric Fisher Wood. One of the first offical acts of the cacus was to adopt a resolution eliminating all consederation of rank or precedence in the declarations of the body.
When Roy Allen Post 44 was created back in 1919, the veterans in Harrison did not really have a Hut of their own, where their monthly meetings were held. Post records dating bach as far as 1922, indicated meetings were held in barious places, one being the office of the post adjutant, Ethel W. Temple, or in the court room of the court house. Some records from 1929 indicated meetings were held in Rileys, and Ackers Cafe, plus several other areas, it was where they could find a room to conduct there meetings. However, it wasn't until 11Apr29 that a new deed was finally issued, then the records from 1929 to 1932 were unaccounted for. Later records found for 1933, indicated that the Legion was in fact going to build a Hut. And by March 1934 the legionaries were holding meeting in the hut, using nothing but saw horses, and nail kegs as seats.
On 5 Jun 34, the Roy Allen American Legion Post 44 was finally dedicated, with state and local officials attending ceremony, with a big feast and dance that followed.
